Default How to get rich article - Courier Mail article

The Courier Mail's 'Q Weekend' ran an article last week on how to make money in this market. A little tongue in cheek, though also with some good points. The journalist considers starting a business called Everest Air. And yes, Business Switch has a view on the merits of the idea.

The article is titled Show Me The Money. If you want the link, read James' message below (as for some strange reason I keep attaching a broken link) and click on through.

I found your article mate, but just FYI, the link in your post is broken.

Nice work, bye the way. I'm curious; has the article resulted in higher enquiry for your business?

Thanks James. You are right. I gave a broken link. I will try to fix it.

This article has generated some interest. However, as Business Switch currently has no active mainstream PR program (the journalists always contact us, not the other way around), we would classify it as good organic pr.

By that, in a general fashion, it helps build our street-cred and position as Australia's leading business start up service. To achieve this we express our position on a subject (regardless of whether that position wins customers or not ... or generates calls or not).

Over time though, such stories collectively result in higher enquiry rates. For example, in the past six months we have appeared in the Australian Financial Review, BRW, Wealth Creator and numerous other online and offline media.

Of course, once a story does appear we have no hesitation in alerting out clients and friends (including those on public forums) to the article. That's just good business sense.

PS: If you are flying Virgin Blue in November, check out the in-flight 'Voyeur' magazine as there is a good chance you may see a feature story on the important things to consider during the first 100 days of your business.

Great article.. and as James I am sure more of us are interested how you generate your Free PR for your business?

Maybe you can write an article here for some of the guys on how to generate PR for your business, unless yours has been fully organic?

    Hi Brendan,

The best way to generate initial publicity in a new business is to have an opinion on issues related to your business. Strong opinions.

Bland statements, boring marketing drivel and corporate gobbledegook just does not cut it.

If you dislike the way the government is failing your business, your community or your family, call up a journo and tell them.

If you believe Australians are getting ripped off by a certain practice and your business provides the solution (thereby saving Aussies from getting ripped off) say it. Say it loud.

Sure, you may knock a few noses out of joint. However, business is not a popularity contest where you need 100% of the population to love you. Just make sure you are not knocking clients and potential clients' noses out of joint.

Globally, everyone is more media savvy. However, this had led to politicians, sport people and business people resorting to tired cliches and meaningless phrases in the media.

No one wants to listen to this rubbish. And journalists hate reporting it.

So be different. Say something interesting. Add value with your comments. Think of how much exposure the chk chk boom girl received (just don't lie like her).

The media will listen and report on it.

Brilliant post, mate. Agree completely and echoes much of what we have done, too. Love your work.
