    Default Big Business Failures

Discussing business crashes with a colleague earlier and it led me to come home and look for some of the biggest failures of modern times. There are some huge companies in the list of 25. How many have you used? How many do you recognise? I was really surprised.

    Some beauties in there!

Betamax! There was a thing. Totally built for the video snob who could show off about their new purchase because the rest of the street could hear it rewinding from a half mile away! Some British comedian was on about Betamax a few years ago and the fact that his dad always used to put a pillow in front of the clock if he was recording something before he went out so burglars couldn't tell that it was set and the house was empty. You had to hear it from him really. It was quite funny though.

Commodore! I remember how the Amiga was going to take over the world. A great machine for its time but sadly no more.

How about Blockbuster? Most of us have used them but increased competition and the development of new media eventually saw them file for bankruptcy in 2010. As far as I know, Dish Network are still struggling to meet their financial obligations after acquiring the company in 2011. Carl Icahn, who resigned from the Blockbuster board of directors in 2010, once described Blockbuster as "the worst investment I have ever made".

There have been some notable ones over in England. There's a football club going into administration on an almost weekly basis now as the flippant spending on players and wages finally catches up with them. It's small clubs at the moment, but you can be pretty much guaranteed that a big club is going to go fall by the wayside eventually.

I didn't realise the Readers Digest Association had gone to the wall! What am I going to read now if I ever need to go to the doctor's surgery?

Big list of them here if you're interested in finding other businesses that have failed in the last few years:
