Default Coopers #1 in the UK

ADELAIDE-based brewer Coopers has been named the world's top family business for 2011 in a poll by a UK magazine.

London-based magazine CampdenFB, which focuses on high-value family-owned businesses, said Coopers had topped an online poll of readers, ahead of Danish-owned Lego, Kenyan retail business Nakumatt, Estee Lauder and US car maker Ford.

CampdenFB editor David Bain said Coopers was a "worthy winner" and an example of revitalisation of a family business with an iconic brand.

"Coopers is a testament to the visionary management of Tim and Glenn Cooper - and indeed the whole Cooper family over the many generations that it has existed," he said.

The magazine noted that Coopers had "the support of the local Australia press" which encouraged Australians to vote for the brewer in the online poll.

Coopers, which has about four per cent of the Australian beer market, became Australia's biggest brewer this year when Foster's was taken over by Anglo-South African company SABMiller.

I still can't believe that out of all of the wonderful things we could be sending to the UK, the poms still seem to be obsessed by our alcohol exports!

Great effort though, Coopers. Well done!

It's maybe more surprising that they think our best alcohol export is Fosters! Seriously, but I wouldn't feed fosters to my dog!

Im hoping that the next time im in the UK ill have the option to have a pint of Coopers instead of the beer that all Australians are too smart to drink so they export it to the Brits (Fosters).

Fosters isn't that highly regarded in the UK either. They're all getting into real ales over here anyway. Imagine flat beer left at room temperature for a week with a heaped tablespoon of vegemite or molasses stirred into it and you'll get the general idea. You need the stomach lining of a robot to spend a night on it.

You'll find Coopers and Tooheys over here if you go to the right places. Lager snobbery is getting pretty big over here and there are some great places now that sell more than 30 different draught beers from all over the world. Great for sampling new tastes and one of the reasons I usually come on here with a hangover.

My local does Fosters. We tend to avoid it and stick to meths. It does less damage to your insides and tastes much better.

Regarding real ales, don't write them off. With summer coming (we know it's summer in the UK because the rain feels warmer), most pubs that serve real ales will be doing what we call 'blonde' guest ales. Very lightly coloured and crisp tasting. Not at all like your dark session ales and as long as the pub keeps a relatively cool cellar, it shouldn't be too bad on temperature either.
