1. SEO audit (The very first step is to stop whatever you're doing when it comes to SEO and analyse your site, how old is your domain, what kind of backlinks i need, is my website optimised, do i have quality content?)
2. Keyword research(Very very crucial is to do your research for the best keywords to rank for that are low competition with high search results)
3. Strategy(The Best way to go about implementing the SEO strategy, list down all the above and start thinking about how you like to rank your site)
4. On Page SEO (Most important, yes i said it! On-Site SEO can often make an immediate and profound impact on search engine positions. It can frequently be the case that a website has very good links to the site however lacking important On-site optimisations and that can negatively impact your ranking and keep you on page 2.)
5. Link building (Important to have a good number of High PR backlinks that are relevant to your site. Some of the best back links are .edu and .gov they are given priority by Google because of their Authority.)
6. Measure Success (Measuring page rank over time and constant optimisation to stay up to date with current algorithms.)

optimise your website to convert more traffic!
instead of trying to get more traffic to and visitors to your website, why don't you try and convert the ones that are visiting into clients, customers, or subscribers?

this is much cheaper to do!

and if you combine it with a long-term SEO strategy such as blogging, social media, and of course leaving some good links

I'm going to disagree with everything on this thread so far. Although there are individual ideas for increasing rankings, you can't tackle your competitors without researching your market first. To beat your competitors, you need to identify them, see who they are targetting, see how the market to their target audience, etc.

Until you know your competitor as well as you know yourself, you'll never see the chinks in their armour.

Very true. I have started using http://www.backlinkwatch.com and it is a free and easy way of sussing out what my competitors in 2012 are doing in 2011.

For my money, there's no bettter way of keeping tabs on the competition than Spy Fu. I'm using it to outwit my competitors on their own keywords and the $79 a month that I pay for it is a wonderful investment. The website also provides some great tutorials to make the most of Spy Fu. My favourite product this year.

From my personal experience, choosing the right keywords, title and unique content plays a very important role in getting your sites rank higher than your competition.
