Default Get The Best Price on Freight

If you intend to organise your own freight forwarding, don't forget to talk to your supplier first. Often, a supplier will organise freight forwarding on behalf of their customers and in many cases, they will be aware of special rates that apply to individual geographical areas. If you can track costs between individual suppliers, it's worth creating a database so that you'll always get the most competitive rates. You may also find that some suppliers are highly familiar with customs clearance and this can save a great deal of time and effort, especially when trans-shipment occurs.

It's all about the bigger picture and simple mathematics, Jake. Let's say you choose a supplier who offers you 5000 bottles of olive oil for $0.50 per unit. That's $2,500 for your full order. However, the cost of transporting those bottles of olive oil to the point of departure, plus the shipping itself, might cost a further $1,500 (I'm using simple figures here). That's $4,000 in total and you still have to get your olive oil home once it arrives in Australia.

Suddenly, you find a supplier selling Olive Oil at $0.60 per unit. Obviously, the olive oil itself is now costing you more ($3,000) but the suppliers have an ongoing freight forwarding contract that can bring your goods into Australia for only $900. That brings down the overall cost to $3,900. That's a saving of $100.

Remember this is simplified and doesn't really go into everything that freight forwarding or shipping companies do. It's just meant to underline the fact that a little homework, and getting the right price at all times, will regularly make or save you money.
