    WOAH!

Word of advice to anybody thinking of running straight to China for imports:

There is nothing wrong with importing from China but experience tells me that it's not always the cheapest place to go for selected products. As with any aspect of importing, choosing the right supplier is vitally important and you should be looking at as many different suppliers from as many different countries as possible. You also need to consider costs oer unit, shipping costs, customs duties, taxes, logistics and many other factors before making a decision.

I've seen plenty of people diving staight into China and it isn't always the best option. It can be, but it won't be the case every time.

I agree. there are many aspects we should write on & comparing, before make a decision of importing, Not only quantitative aspects that we can count on calculator, but include qualitative aspects that is very important, such us quality of product, easy to communicate, customs regulation, lead time delivery, etc.
not the cheapest product is the best one. sometimes we just need to open our eyes & find some opportunity within our reach.

I've dealt with imports for many years and I can assure you all that there is nothing cut-and-dried about the subject. It's a fairly intense experience that requires much thought, careful planning, studious research and capital. However, there are mountains of money to be made if you can find a product that isn't available in Australia so long as competition levels are low and costs can be controlled effectively.

Over the years, I've worked for companies that have imported everything from electrical components to sun-dried tomatoes (a story in itself that has created an immense passion for pasta dishes). We generated some amazing profits along the way, but rarely used the Chinese market itself. There are so many choices out there, so look into them all before making a commitment.

China market should still be the first place you start looking overseas.

Let me correct that one for you, TKG...

The China market is just one of the places where you should be looking overseas.

Importing, maybe more than any other type of business, requires extensive research when it comes to finding suppliers. You might be able to find cheaper products in China, but what about the shipping costs, customs duties, taxes and other associated costs? Remember that your cost per unit has to be worked out taking all of these factors into consideration.

What works out cheaper? Let's say you can import laptops from China for $250 each, but your additional charges increase the cost per unit by $60 when shipping, customs and logistics are included. Your laptop now has a cost per unit of $310.

Now, let's assume the same laptop is available for $260 in Japan, but shipping costs are much cheaper (let's say shipping, customs and everything else amounts to $35 per laptop). This makes your cost per unit $295 which means there's an additional $15 of profit in every laptop sold. Sell 10,000 laptops a year and that's an additional $150,000 of profit just by researching your marketplace extensively and finding the right supplier.

Yup! China is a great place to find low-cost imported products. However, it's not the only marketplace in the world.
