I guess this post is sort of along side my other one..
What car do you drive? and do you think the car you drive reflects your image of success?
Alfa Romeo GTV (list of mods available seperately) - before that a BA Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo and previous to that a fully restored Ford Capri Xr2 Turbo (also a long list of modifications).
I also ride a Honda CBR125 R soon to be upgraded to a Suzuki GSXR - 400

Well i've been saying it for a year, but hopefully soon my datsun 260z will be up and running in less than a month... so should be driving that around soon...
Not sure if it is a measure of my success, more a measure of what i think looks good/sexy in a car :P
Since I am in London still, there is no need for a car! So I catch the big red bus or the underground everywhere and it's great.
I am a very big performance car fan and used to own a Subaru WRX, then prior to that a Nissan Skyline R33.. both reasonably modified.
Does what car you drive affect your image of success? Hrm.. not necessarily.. unless you are picking clients up, or leaving your car in their driveway etc.. I am sure if you rocked up in an clapped out old ford escort they may think differently that if you turned up in a nice Audi rs4..
But if you look in the other foot.. if you do own an expensive car they could think that you are getting paid too much![]()
So I think a happy medium needs to be reached based on what sector you work in.
I own a 2004 79 series landcruiser with everything turbo diesel
I also own about 5 other cars all toyotas.
Argh, can't stand public transport... (whole other story there).
I agree with what you say Brendan, when you see a guy who sells you your office stationery driving a brand new porsche carrerra then you start asking your self about what kind of margins you are paying on your pens :-). (true story)

I drive a 4WD, it doesn't reflect my success but it does reflect what I like to do....camping and 4WDriving.
I have found that others judge your success by the vehicle you drive...on at least one occassion I have provided a quotation for services and the response was "what type of car do you drive", the point being that I must drive a Ferrari because of the prices I quoted. However, the facts were that I pay my employees above award rates and all there entitlements.
A colleague lost a job because he drove an MX5 BMW, his client again thought he must be charging to much.

I drive a mercedes mb140, a big van.
Its a moving billboard for my business and suitable to carry the signage we manufacture.
I have a 2000 Toyota Avalon Grande and a 2006 Mazda 2. Right now I drive the Mazda, because it's lighter on fuel....
My view is that a car serves the following purposes for business/work:
Anything else is really a "lifestyle factor" - an optional "nice to have".
- transport people from A to B
- transport material from A to B
- marketing/promotion (including self promotion)
- professional competition/motorpsorts

I am currently caught in between my old lifestyle and my new one when it comes to cars..
My old lifestyle included spending(wasting) lots of money on fast expensive cars, my new lifestyle invests money in property and business.
The only problem is, my old lifestyle keeps tapping me on the shoulder saying '.. hey look at that nice expensive car.. you have some money sitting there.. go on buy it...'
How can I stop the urges?
