But one must consider its effectiveness (ie. how do you measure the return on investment?). I'm seeing the trend that online ads, banners are getting less and less effective as people have all sorts of ad blocking software on their machines, especially for Firefox user like myself - having an Adblock Add On installed, i don't see any ads whatsoever on any websites on the internet. Yes, the adblock is getting smarter and smarter guys. We really need to think ahead and look for a new way to get real value from marketing cost.
I am not sure I agree with this. While Firefox is increasing in popularity, most people will not run the full ad blocker. Meanwhile for IE and Chrome users, most standard ads will show (though I am pleased that pop over and pop under ads can be blocked).

Ads are part and parcel of life. They help fund free to air tv, free web and free radio. Do you want to have to pay for all these things ... or do you prefer an advertiser supported business model?

I just took a look at Aussie Tycoon advertiser Best Banner Ad Design Companies - Web Banner Ad Rankings and clearly the top five banner ad companies listed on their site spend every day of their professional lives creating banner ads for people.

So it seems to me that the banner ad market remains very large and appears to have bounced back from the tech bust doldrums of 2002/3.

Oh, and one more thing, if you block banner ads you may miss very funny ads like this one - Bridge Worldwide 2009: Cannes Cyber Lions Gold - Pringles Can Hands (yes, before anyone pulls me up I did pinch the URL from Best Banner Ad Design Companies - Web Banner Ad Rankings).

It sure made me laugh (just remember to keep clicking the ad)!

Then again, you may not be able to see it if you are blocking banner ads!

Thanks The Start Up Sage for the comment. It maybe true that most people don't use ad blocking software on their machines. But as i said earlier, i can see the trend of it. Consumers nowadays are getting more sophisticated so we all have to be on top of the game on marketing.

And don't get me wrong, ads are part of life and will continue to be that way. But my concern is about whether banner is really the effective method in reaching targeted market? If it's not should we then invest the time & money into other marketing methods that work? What are other marketing methods? It's another topic.

I like the idea - it has a lot of merit. I have read the rules but really want to be sure that I do not upset the apple cart - is it allowable to promote your business in the forum posts in here ? by way of hyperlinks ? I am not here JUST TO DO THAT by any means but it is hard not to

    cheers,

You think? I had 2000 odd when I logged on today, then I posted and now I have zero. Where'd they go?

Edit: and now back to 2130. Weird. And of course when I hit 'save' after editing my post to write that, its back to zero again ???
