That's a pretty tragic metaphor albeit probably some truth in it.
How do you translate that into the human experience?
I have my own thoughts on how I interpret the story... simply that it reminds me of the saying, "it's hard to soar like an Eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys". Undoubtedly it's the sarcastic type of comment often made when someone feels he or she can't expect to reach great heights when others restrict him or her.

I think it is a little like saying those who you surround yourself with you become.. so if you want to be something different surround yourself with different people.
I bet if you look at your close group of friends, you all do the same things, have similar interests, heck probably even like the same clothes?
But.. do they aspire the way we do? If the answer is no, time for new friends!
