So, what business are we all in, or what business to you want to be in?
My business is primarily online, we provide Multimedia Solutions to our clients most of which is via the web, but we also do shop window stuff such as displays, touch screens, DVDs etc..
I hope to start to move into the IT consultancy market in the next 12-18months, aimed at promoting efficient, cost effective IT for small and growing businesses.

I, along with another bloke, run a company called eCo-shot. It is a purely mechanically driven setup to inject LPG on turbo diesels.

Currently I am in college but I run a blog www.tymez.com on the side. I hope to get into business management after I have finished and hopefully own my own company. I'm also studying a couple of computer certification courses.
I'm into health and currently run the health site www.veganisgreen.com. I also do health seminars for different organizations including business. Basically giving them ways to lower their health insurance costs. Something that is very high in the states.

Lol. Seems like I am not the only one who is having problems with my website designers. For that reason I have tried to do most designing myself. Unfortunately I am not real good in PHP so that is outsource stuff for the time being. Maybe not for long though.

Crackers, how good are you at cutting up designs and coding them? this could be a cheaper option for you..?
Lots of designers will be happy to do you up a template design a fair bit cheaper if you can code it yourself?

Coming up with the right deisgn can be a headache. Especially when you are trying out a new venture.
I run my blog Make Money Blogging With Thomas Sinfield (http://www.thomassinfield.com) as well as a bit of affiliate marketing. I am also working on lauching a blog design company.
Hi guys,
I have been in the Telecommunications industry for the past 4-5 years. Mainly store management and sales with some business to business portfolio sales in there for good measure.
My business partner and I are wanting to enter the Telco market ourselves in the new year with a small shop.

Our business is 428 Publishing Services. We create and publish customised newsletters for businesses and associations. We also offer proofreading, editing and writing services.
We're starting up a computer services business in rural SA, fixing computers, selling new systems, basic websites and hopefully also doing some business-to-business computer consulting too. We've just bought a bunch of advertising but none of it will see the light of day for a few months so we're just renovating and subdividing a house in the meantime.
I also run a kid's website that I haven't done a thing to for months (ah, there's that renovation again) but the traffic has really picked up for no apparent reason and my advertising revenue just doubled. Can't get more passive than that!
We also have been working on a major sideline project that unfortunately needs more money than we have to get it going. So all the other things we do earn money to feed us, and feed that project.

Sounds like you have a lot on your plate at the moment. I know what you mean, I (Lynda) am planning a wedding at the moment and Jayde is a bridesmaid so we have been flat out with that and launching the business.
Do you have a website for your computer/web business? We are in the process of organising a website at the moment and may need you! Also, at the moment 428 Publishing Services produces printed newsletters but one day we would like to move in to electronic newsletters so we are trying to build contacts in your area. It would be great to hear back from you with your info.

We run an online personal finance course with manuals, video presentations, live coaching call and an online forum for members. It has an affiliate program with it so that affiliates receive 20% commission from each course sold.
My background is as an analyst programmer (RPG in JDE for any geeks :))
but it wasn't fulfilling after 15 years!
It always amazes me how little people know about their personal finances so we (myself and my husband) have written this course.
We've had some good feedback and will be releasing another version of the course with recorded calls shortly.
However we want to get the course out in front of more people so that we can teach more people.
So we are looking for more ways to promote the website cost effectively, quality affiliates to sell the course, and possibly doing workshops.
Regards,
Karen

I help Small Business Owners to grow their businesses without additional advertising expense.
I help Small Business Owners to identify areas within their businesses that may be underperforming, underutilised, or not yet established, and turn these around into profit producing or cost effective growth solutions.
Often small business owners reach a point where they want to grow to the next level, and after a couple of years in business are doing okay, but want to do better.
Many of them turn to advertising - TV, radio, newspapers, YP, even the internet - without really evaluating the advertising ROI.
I help them market their businesses cost effectively in measurable ways without advertising.
Because the focus is on leveraging existing assets, there is less dependence upon traditional advertising, and as a result there can be very impressive cost savings.
It is also possible with the right targeted marketing, to produce tangible results quite quickly, even as much as 10% growth in sales and profits in the first few weeks of making the kinds of changes I can identify in the business.
I'm also extending into Small Business Owner education, providing information evenings to help them survive and grow during the tough economy and in good times.
These information evenings are operated as a partnership venture with Small Business Service providers who offer the education to their own clients to boost their own results.
I offer a Complimentary Business Analysis valued at $500.00 to Small Business Owners which gives them a couple of hours of my time, to examine their current business situation and look for ways to grow their businesses without the additional advertising expense.
If you know Small Business Owners in Melbourne or North/West Victoria looking for a boost in their business - tradies, retail, commercial... in business 2+ years, and with good turnover around $1/2 mill or more - then contact me and we can make arrangements to offer them my complimentary business assessment.

Hi,
I am an angel investor on the Sunshine Coast, and have just built a website to introduce others to Angel investing.

Any feedback welcome.

I own a website design and development business based in Newcastle, Australia called Tisme (http://www.tisme.com.au). I've found that the web design market in Australia is lacking in creativity and innovation though these businesses still like to charge top dollar for a website which does not meet industry standards and looks horrible. As many of you forum members (who are also business owners) realise, the financial crisis is upon us and businesses are looking for ways to increase cash flow and find alternative means of revenue. People are now understanding that putting your business online is not only going to add another source of income for you, but it's also going to open up a whole different world for yourself and for your business.
Unlike other website design businesses who see this as a way to make a quick profit, I have decided to keep my prices the same (naturally cheaper then competitors) and support my clients every step of the way - something which is unfortuantely lacking in the market.
Yeah, so that's about it. I also own other websites and domains which bring in a steady income but I pride myself on my website design and development business. If you need anything done online, speak to me.

I'm curious, mate; given the assertion that your product is better than the majority of others, why do you feel the need to be cheaper than them, too?

Mainly because we're a new business, therefore we're engaging in penetration pricing to attract new clients. You can read an interview that outlines some of our practices by clicking here (http://spicywebdesigners.com/2009/06/spicy-web-designer-interview-with-mathew-carpenter-and-friends-at-tisme/).

I used to run a mobile phone shop in partnership with some friends, but it shut down last year due to many reasons. I am now starting my very own business, it's a discount handbook. website still under construction: Home (http://www.imastudent.com.au)
The handbook basically is a marketing tool to bring traffic to the website
I see students as a big part of australia's economy so it got me thinking to start something and get student's interest and attention
At the moment, searching for advertiser to join up but the road is much tougher and bumpier than I thought so wish me luck

I can understand that theory. So next question; How long do you keep penetration pricing going before meeting (or exceeding?) the market average?
Btw, nice interview. Some good stuff there.

I'm currently studying law at university, I already have a diploma in business management, and I am considering adding business to the degree, once I graduate I want to get some experience, then open up my own firm, and offer consulting for start up companies with some of my uni mates (covering the start up issues, development and implementation of business plans/marketing plans for companies with legal things bundled up to it).
:)

You have been pretty busy! Business Degree and Law.. you must be spending a few years at uni?
Good work.. what do your uni mates do? are they are driven and determined as you?
joshyybaxx

It's not really overly busy, but the readings are hard (for law) I am only currently doing law at the moment, with intention to add business at the end of this year.
The majority of my uni mates are doing business (marketing) and law degree's, they'll be there for either 4,5 or 5.5 years (if everything goes well) depending on if they have any credits shifted to it from previous study. A few of them are working in the industry, others just full time study.
My degree is a 4 year straight law degree, though because I went to college and did business management it may be cut down to either 3, or 3.5. However once you complete the law degree you have to specialise into either the law society (to be a solicitor), or the bar association (barristers). Which can take another half a year, or a year, depending on the electives we choose which may shorten the process during our degree.
Right now I am helping my gf's dad with his company, with marketing etc, since he isn't too into the behind the scenes theories and planning of running a business as he is in trades (but he still knows what he is doing, I just bounce idea's off him).
So I help him with creating customer links, and I will be working on implementing a stage where I'll call up the clients he has finished the job (he does roof restorations) and ask if they are happy with it, and letting them know of a thing the company has got going, which is offering people $100 per person they refer the company too, that follow through and get a full roof restoration :)
Nice to meet you Brendan. :)
Regards,
Josh
Great stuff Josh.
I have a friend foing a law degree and they study bloody hard, I don't know where you would find time to help your gf's dad.. but good on you.
