Hi All,

I think the search keyword i punched into Google was business advice partner forum that ultimately brought me to this site. That keyword explains my intentions nicely.

1. I've come in search for business advice and
2. I'm searching for a business partner

Last month I made a decision that I will create a business and that I wanted nothing to get in my way of doing so. I remember hearing a story of an Army Commander who had taken his soldiers across water to fight a war. Once their ships arrived on enemy territory, he ordered that the ships that they used, be destroyed.

This is a story about conviction and it inspired me to make a similar decision in my life. Last month I gave my employer my resignation effective from the end of November 2008.

For what it’s worth, I’m currently a Research and Development Manager. Before that, I was a rooky Business Analyst for a major Australian franchisor.

Next month I test my wings as an entrepreneur – although, I still do not know “what” or “how” I’m going to do it.

I’m interested in online auctions, importing, fitness, health, I.T, telecommunications, and a whole lot of other things. I ideally want to leverage one of these things into a profitable business.

I would like a business partner to share this venture, this journey with. I would ask that you take a moment to watch the following video, and then to message me so that we can share ideas.

Cheers,

Hey Ayden,

First of all, welcome to the forum.

I'm glad to hear you are inspired and willing to take action, most people sit and think about it, but never do anything about it, so taking the first step is probably the biggest move anyone can make.

I am however shocked to know that you took the step without first putting a plan in place! It seems like you have jumped out of a plane without checking the parachute, hoping it is going to work?! It is fantastic to have a dream, but you also need to mitigate the risks involved with jumping out of the plane... if you know what I mean?

So, lets get this plan started, what business do you want to start, how much money do you need to make to survive, and what do you need from a business partner?

Lets get those questions answered first, then we can start moving forward.

Hi Brendan,

Of course that would’ve been the sensible way to do it. It's the advice I'd give everyone. But in my case I wanted no other alternative and no excuses. Just like that Army Commander who destroyed his ships.

I haven't really analysed my actions, but I would say that sub-consciously I made a decision to "sacrifice" something really good that I had in order to create a high pressure emotional state within me that I’ll have no choice but to be motivated to act and to be responsive to opportunities that I would have probably dismissed whilst employed.

Another way of saying that is my sub-conscious acted when my consciousness procrastinated due to being complacent.

I certainly didn’t make the decision to leave work because of any “internal politics” or any other reason. In fact, my job and the company are both amazingly good. The GM is mentoring me weekly, the company has won a lot of the accolades from BRW, and other industry publications last year, we’ve grown at over 200% for two consecutive years, and the people here are young, friendly and very drunk on Friday’s office drinks.

My intentions behind searching for a business partner is to share an idea and create it into a business. We’ll both need to have ownership of the company. I would actually prefer more than 1 partner.

I would be perfectly content owning 25% of a company with 4 great partners, or owning 50% with one other. The main ingredient that I’m searching for is someone with same or higher knowledge and drive then me.

My plan for a business is this: I want to create a website for customers to compare and make informed decisions about service providers. I define service provider's as business’s offering telecommunications, Utilities, credit cards, etc.

The benefit here from the customers perspective is that they’re simply shown how much a service will cost compared so others.

The site will make money by approaching these Service Providers to advertise their rates at a nominal rate at first.

...This is really only one idea that I have had in mind. There are competitors out there that do offer this and I haven’t really thought of a Unique Selling Proposition yet.

To answer your question about survival: I have my investment property up for sale and I have money in the bank to last half a year. I’ll start applying for a part time job this weekend, and I’m confident that I’ll get one in the next month.

Cheers,
Ayden

Ayden,

As Brendan said, welcome to the site and congratulations on taking the first steps to achieving your goals.

Your idea is a good start, i agree with Brendan that making sure you have a good plan in place beforehand will save you alot of time and money in the future.

Before starting on a plan think about your goals.

Why have you made this decision to go into business and be an entrepreneur?
Are you looking to be financially free, if so how much per year passive income would you classify financially free?
The questions you need to ask yourself is what do you want to have.

From there think about Who has done what you are wanting to do before, what kinds of people have achieved these things.

This will show you the kind of person you need to be to achieve your goals, now start reading, listening, watching, networking etc.. learn as much as you can about becoming the kind of person you need to be to achieve your goal.

You see once you know who you need to be to get what you want, you will know what you need to do!

the point i'm eventually making here is... if your end result is to have a 3 day work week for the next 20 years, the business you create and the things you do to develop that business will be very different to if your goal is to build a business up and then sell it in 2 years time.

My suggestion for looking for partners is get out there, but get out there with a bit more detail.

I personally would want to see a bit more than a idea, when i look at partnering with people i like to see some research, facts, proof that your idea is unique and some proof on how you came up with projections of income etc..

Hi Carl,

The reason why I’m attracted in becoming a business owner and entrepreneur is ultimately for freedom. That is the means to an end.
But, in saying that, I’m also attracted to the actual journey one take to become a business owner and the idea of owning my own business.

I define freedom in a very sensible way(I think). I see it as doing what I really like to do. And what I really like is to run a business.
Therefore, freedom = owning my own business

I like your advice about finding others who have achieved what I want. NLP call this Modelling, and is an effective way of achieving. I forgot all about that! One of the things on my to do list is to go back over the chapter of Modelling in the few NLP books I have. Tony Robbins also mentions this in his audio courses.

Appreciate the link to LinkenIn. A great site with a lot of great exposure...

Ok – so the big question here is “what business do I want to operate” – In answering this I’ve listed the attributes I would like the business to have:

1. The business will be online
2. Provide a service
3. It’ll be subscription based where my customers pay an ongoing monthly fee
4. Ethically right. i.e. no adult sites

I don’t have the answer to the above question yet. Still searching...

Cheers,
Ayden

Why is it adult sites get lumped into 'ethically wrong'? Child porn I can understand as that is wrong everywhere, but not a generic legal adult site.

/rant off

Yes, I'm in *that* industry.
