Looks of website VS Functionality of website..

Which on is better?

I was talking to my It team and they told me functionality is the best and decided to go simple on the web interface (as it will be heavily used by our customers)... as for me the marketing person, looks is so VERY important cause it causes first impressions..

So any opinions?

Functionality and speed - no fancy animation / sounds etc. No nonsense.

Y-man is right on the mark here. Although you can make a site look very good and still keep it light.

Definitely no sounds! Very bad for surfing at the office.

It also depends on what market you are targeting your website at, if its a kids website, then fancy animations, colours and games are very important, if you are trying to sell something or get top listings in search engines then KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid)..

Although with new technologies such as Ajax, websites can be very light, simple yet extremely intelligent and look fantastic.. facebook is a great example of this.
