Thank you for asking me brendan
Japanese management is pretty much the same as the western type of management, except for its execution which is different due to the fact they have a different type of culture compared to the western people - they do it differently. Japanese management in fact was westernized after the WWII after many western management gurus like Dr. Deming and Juran taught them the use of statistical methods in finding the correct solutions in problems solving. The Japanese people are really good at perfecting what they'd learned with strict discipline.
There are few things we may find it's a little 'out of our ways' in Japan, like the way we should walk went going to work or walking up or down stairways are followed deligently by the Japanese people. One shouldn't walk with both hands in the pockets even in cold morning winter (to prevent slip)or one should hold the railing of the stairways(to prevent tripping) and one should not put ones hand in the pocket when making presentation (considered very rude). These few examples are the basic essence of the Japanese style of managing the discipline of the employees.
Japanese style uses power of group dymanics n cohesivenes in nearly all its day to day operations like decisions making or taking actions. Although a decision is endorsed by the president of the company, it was infact decided earlier by consensus of a committee and even though it was decided by the committee, the content of the decision has already know by the employees. The decision by the president is in fact not a surprise because people had already started working on it. This is what the Japanese people called in Nemawashi. (gathering all the roots) and the reason why Japanese style advocates fast actions, action plans are taken action well in advance.
In terms on copying Japanese style, I think it has lots of positive points that can be adopted in our organisations, and be extra careful some implementations if wrongly carried out can have a detrimental effect to the company; like the resignation of 'individually focused people' who might feel that its unfair for peers to piggy ride on his or her ideas.
I hope I'd answered you questions.
thanks n have a nice day

Hi Jaffar
I only remember seeing Japanese Businessmen, ON "60min i think" PUMPING up. before a big meeting, etc. and then, when it all went wrong. taking the bad news, well pretty bad,
I guess being passionate and respectful about what you do.
is the driving force behind a lot of it. So full Credit to them.
