Hey guys I'm working on a job for a client who needs a forum setup. Nothing crazy, just needs to do the basic stuff. Anyone have any recommendations?
The most important thing is that it keeps spam bots out effectively. I don't want to install and setup their forum and then have it overrun with viagra ads.

Hey Lemon - how izya ? you have probably done this but visit a number of forums and look in the page footer for the program driving that forum.
cheers,
Mike
We use Invision Power Board.
Keeping out spambots takes work.
I have one forum that I manually check all new signups against stopforumspam.com and one I can't be bothered, it is a very small forum with a small userbase but active admins so they just get banned as they appear.
We have it set up on both boards so new users go into a holding group until they reach X posts (X is smaller for the slow forum) and while they are in the holding group they can't do ANYTHING useful ... they're heavily restricted. This seems to be by far the most effective way of doing it.
Also set up a swearword filter for viagra/cialis/pharm/etc, and set up a username filter for the same thing so that people can't sign up with those words in their usernames. Also filter out mod/admin type words too because there's a class of spambot who pretend to be superusers and PM all your users with official sounding crap.
Captchas don't stop paid 3rd world real human forum spammers, but they do stop bots.
