I've built and sold a couple of websites over the years, but last week I sold my biggest and oldest. It was an automotive forum with around 8,000 members, although only a small percentage of them were active. The price achieved was okay, enough to keep my new business running for a few months, which is great at this early stage! :)

Has anyone else here sold a website before? Were you happy with the price?

Congrats. I've never sold a website before. Was it hard to let it go? Was it like handing your beloved but unsuitable pooch over to the pound in the hope it finds a better life or was it a joy to let go?

It wasn't too hard to let it go, it just feels strange not owning it anymore. I've sold a few previously, but they didn't have anywhere near the same level of attachment!

The new owner is far better resourced to take the site to the next level, as his business is to buy and run these types of sites.

Ive sold quite a few web assets, from basic websites, through to facebook Applications.

I have even done a few website flips as well.. where we buy old run down websites, do them up drive good traffic to them and sell them for a profit.. very similar to property really!

I know a few people personally who make their entire income selling ready made websites, usually make $200-$2000 a pop and each one usually only takes a few hours to make.

So.. if they made 5 websites per week, thats a 10-15 hour week, and easily brings them in a minimum of $1000 a week.. not bad huh?

If this is something some of you are interested in, I would be happy to chat to you about it :)

We haven't sold any web assets ... yet. We are still building them. So, one, was the real value in the site or the database?

I usually sell sites between $800 to $1200... usually try to sell them fast, a bit cheaper that I could sell them... trying to make an easy transaction. Congrats in selling your site. Well done..

To be honest I don't know whether the value was in the site or the database, as selling websites is far from my core business. I guess it was a bit of both?

Whilst on the subject, the guy who bought the site has done an absolutely abysmal job of the handover. I've stepped in a few times to cool things down with the members, but each time everyone seems to be getting on again, the new owner comes out and says or does something which pisses everyone off again!

I've done everything I possibly could to ensure a smooth handover, but I think the new US owner doesn't know how to deal within Australians.

Thanks one. Its a subject of interest to me so if anyone has an idea, just let us know.

As for the US firm ... it wouldn't be the first time. Just look at the hole Telstra ended up in with US management failing to understand the Aussie psyche!

Can't say I have ever gotten one of my websites to the stage of "selling them" - I personally don't think I would be able to let go.

What a shame to hear about it's mismanagement ... Sounds like a pretty average, arrogant American!

I have no idea to sell web assets, but i think $800 - $1200 not sufficient amount

thanks

How did you find a buyer?

I found a buyer through flippa.com which is basically a marketplace for established websites. It's run by a few Aussie guys, the same ones who own sitepoint.com and 99designs.com - both services which I have used and would definitely recommend.

Does anyone know any good sites that provide you with an estimated value of what your website's worth?

A friend of mine has sold his website for not much money. I thought he made a mistake but then he told me that if the new owner wants to use the same url for the site in two years, he would have to pay something extra. It was part of the deal. Now i think it was a smart deal.
