A list of Free Australian Online Directories.

There has been quite a bit of talk about directory marketing of late, so I thought I would share a list of Australian Directories that was sent to me by Brendan from Exstatic Media (http://www.exstatic.net).

Directories are an excellent way to promote your business, and can also give you that saucy link juice that helps in search engine rankings..

Nice list! I just went through and added my business details to each of them.

All went well except one:
www.livepages.com.au/ (http://www.livepages.com.au/) ... seems a bit dodgy. After registering for my "free" account, i get an e-mail titled "Order Confirmation & Tax Invoice"... it was a tax invoice with my details billing me for "Video Listing in the LivePages Business Directory for 52 weeks, expiring April 8, 2011" TOTAL PAYABLE 544.50
"A 50% deposit ($272.25, including GST) is required before Video Listing production can commence. The remaining balance is payable when the Video Listing is published and live on the LivePages.com.au (http://livepages.com.au/) website. *Once video listing is live, the expiry date will be adjusted to reflect a full 52 week term."

Anyone else get this? LOL seems a bit dodgy, needless to say I won't be paying a cent for something I didn't order.

not that i'm aware of... i didn't get the usual "registration successful" e-mail but got that invoice instead... i hope it's just a bug

I have a child and parenting link directory at Child and parenting link directory | Giraffian (http://giraffian.com/links) but it is niche not general, and certainly not Australian only.

The vast, vast, VAST majority of the traffic to that site is from overseas.

You don't want to know how many Indian industrial links I get that I just delete ...

i noticed the yellowpages have a free listing option yesterday, seems like more of a way for them to get people they can call up to offer their online yellowpages directory full service though.

i use the majority of them all the time. they are a great way to look at competitive businesses and as a method of comparison. These days anything online is useful, saves the time of looking through thousands of pages

I am wondering how successful it is a promotional tool. Has anyone have any stats say using google analytics that can say how much traffic the generate through directories?

Would be interesting to know the stats. I will probably go ahead and register on a few anyway but would be great to know if its worth really spending some more time so i get the results.

If no one does i will report back in a few weeks to let you know how i go.

Thanks Aussie Tycoon and all replies for a great list of business directories. I have now listed my business in all of them. The only one I couldn't get on with was businesssearch.com.au. I opted for a free listing and couldn't get it to go past the first page. So I tried to ask for help using the contact us page and that wouldn't work either. Anyone else have this problem?

The City Web Guide Network covers Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and targets local customers.
Tt is completely free and is aimed at businesses with websites, as it combines a free business listing with some free seo services.
Their main site is here - thecitywebguide.com.au - also there is a link to the sydney site which I work for in my signature below...

Its very quick to register and they offer various upgrade options to get more traffic to your site.

There must be more valid business directories and please send me any suggestions. Note: suggestions should be business directories that are not spammers, skammers and actually add the web sites you ask for.

I've been working on a new site that has a business directory component - brand new though so no PR and no listings to speak of yet. I'd prefer listings from regional areas rather than metro but if you have a product available via post or electronically I don't care where you're from.
